Spring 2008 Letter from JLM President
April 01, 2008 - It is with great pride that I write this message updating you on the accomplishments of the Junior League of Macon during our 70th year as a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International. What a privilege it has been serving such a dynamic group of women as their President. We have had a terrific year!
Our 250 active members have completed countless hours serving in both community agencies as well as working internally to support the fundraising and mission of the Junior League of Macon. We have distributed $51,000 to a variety of local agencies who are working to make a true difference in our community. This included our third and final installment of our $50,000 commitment to the Macon Volunteer Clinic. We also partnered with the Girl Scouts of Central Georgia to host the third annual Ms. Wizard event to interest Pre-teen girls in career fields involving science and technology, and are working with Campus Club girls on a new curriculum called Skills for Success. The League also partnered with the Bibb County Board of Education and Mercer University Panhellenic women on a “Kid’s Boutique”. JLM members, along with a group of teachers and parents, took 20 children from Burdell-Hunt Magnet School shopping for proper school clothing and supplies. It was a huge success and a lot of fun!
There is no time to slow down just yet - the League has a full calendar for the Spring. On Saturday, April 5th we will be building a KaBOOM! Playground in the old Water Works Park, one of the NewTown Macon’s revitalization efforts. Around 350 people will gather in the morning of the 5th and create a beautiful, new handicap accessible playground for all of Middle Georgia’s children to enjoy. I want to personally thank the Bibb County Medical Society for all of their support and countless volunteer hours, gearing up and raising money for this project! April 26th and 27th, we will be hosting our 6th Annual Le Tour of Kitchens. This year we will feature several kitchens in the St. Andrews/Country Club area and will be hosting a buffet luncheon at Marco’s on Saturday, the 26th.
As you can see, our members are busy implementing our mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. There is a tremendous amount of planning and preparation that goes into each of our funding and programming decisions. Each placement is researched for a year before it is implemented. Our major fundraisers are longstanding traditions where the steering committees can benefit from years of experience. This planning and forethought is a large factor in the success of our programs over the years. We are ever changing and growing and our ability to adapt ensures our success, along with the support of our community. For that, I thank you!
The true beauty of so many of the placements which we have undertaken this year is that they lay the groundwork for making our community a better place for our children and grandchildren. Perhaps one of the children that we work with now will remember that experience and want to do the same for someone else one day.
Please take time to enjoy this wonderful Community Magazine put together by some great members. Let us share with you what we are doing. If you want to know more about something or have a question, please feel free to contact us. Have a wonderful Spring and we hope to see you at some of our events!
Thank you again for the privilege to serve.
Yours truly,
Mary Bennet Dunwody Rose
President, Junior League of Macon
