Fall Letter from the President

October 22, 2008 -
Fall Insert 2008: President’s Perspective
We are delighted to present this Community Report and share with you information about the Junior League of Macon. Due to your support of our fundraisers and programs we have been able to provide funding and countless volunteer hours in the Middle Georgia area for 71 years. Thank you for your support.
Our mission is to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. In 1901, the founder of the first Junior League, Mary Harriman, set out to improve the deplorable conditions of the immigrant population. She quickly realized that it was not enough to simply want to “do good.” Volunteers need to be trained in order to be effective. Today, the fact that we provide trained volunteers to our community helps differentiate us from other worthy charitable organizations.
We are a diverse group of women who make volunteer work a priority in our lives. Our focus remains improving women’s and children’s health in our community through education, fundraising, advocacy, and hands-on projects. We have a lot of fun and inspirational moments along the way. Our volunteer placements this year reflect the efforts of our Placement Research Committee to both identify community needs and provide meaningful training opportunities for our members. One of the highlights this year will be the Grand Opening of the Playground at Water Works Park. Through collaboration with the Bibb County Medical Society, New Town Macon, The Peyton Anderson Foundation, The Community Foundation and KaBoom, the Junior League of Macon was very proud to help build the area’s only handicapped useable playground.
Thanks to the success of last year’s fundraisers, we will contribute over $50,000 to the Middle Georgia community. This publication lists the many Community Agencies that will directly benefit from our funding and volunteer service this year. How are we able to generate this revenue? The Junior League of Macon secures valuable Corporate Sponsorships, collects membership dues, and organizes annual fundraising events. Market Place will be October 23-25, 2008 at the Anderson Conference Center at Goodwill. Please join us as we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Market Place. It promises to be the best yet! Sally Foster Gift Wrap Sales continue now through January 2009 and we will usher in the Spring with LeTour of Kitchens in April 2009.
As you can see, it’s going to be an exciting year! Thank you for the role you play in supporting our mission. We will strive to identify emerging community needs and ways to best meet those needs now and in the future. A desire and an unwavering commitment to make a difference in our community – this defines the Junior League of Macon. Thank you for reading our Community Report. For more information, please visit our website – www.jlmacon.org or email us at jlm@jlmacon.org.
I hope to see you all at Market Place!
Holly Reeves President, Junior League of Macon
